Synopsis Alice Hoffman spins a dark tale of three sisters who are traumatized in different ways by the same event. As children, Elv, Meg and Claire Story lived in a magical world of stories, creating characters to act out their feelings and communicating via a shared language that simultaneously brought them closer together while shutting them off from reality. But as they approach adolescence, an incident of sexual abuse forever alters their co-existence, sending Elv into a freefall of drugs and sex and severing the bonds between the sisters. Soon they are caught in a repetitive cycle of deceit and betrayal, as tragedies multiply and force them further into their interior versions of reality. Hoffman's elegiac prose somehow conjures carthartic beauty from even the most dismal of events, as she memorably depicts both the harmful and the healing potential of myth and fiction.
Industry Reviews "The always dazzling Hoffman has outdone herself in this bewitching weave of psychologically astute fantasy and shattering realism....[T]his is an entrancing and romantic drama shot through with radiant beauty and belief in human resilience and transformation." (starred review) (04/01/2009)
"[A] brilliantly detailed delineation of ever-shifting power relations among siblings and a beautiful portrait of love's redemptive power....[with a] radiant finale [that] reminds us what a satisfying novelist Alice Hoffman can be." (06/03/2009)
"Hoffman has a child's dreamy eye, in the best possible sense....She invents a realm where that sense of the fictive doesn't go away, where imagination and reality bleed together." (06/07/2009)
"Hoffman is at her best as she shows the girls growing up, their identities crystallizing, their allegiances shifting....[T]he novel, which is strongest at its most bittersweet,...captures the magic of ordinary moments." (07/12/2009)
