Industry Reviews
Gr 1-5 An interactive picture book with a seek-and-find theme and a medieval setting. While Squire Leofric is cleaning his master's sword, the priceless emerald in its hilt falls out. The boy's pet monkey grabs it and heads off at top speed, setting Leofric, along with readers, on a search in and around the castle. Done in watercolor and ink, the illustrations on the busy double-page spreads are filled with people and objects. In addition to seeking out the jewel, children are instructed to keep track of the ghost of the sword's first owner, look for the modern devices that show up in tapestries woven by a woman who can see into the future, and follow a courtship between Sir Gawhine and the fair Eglantine, among other "medieval mix-ups." Some hints are given in the dialogue bubbles, but it takes keen eyesight and a clever mind to get through this adventure. Young readers can never get enough of this genre. A fun purchase.
