Synopsis
Max Meyer lives in an English seaside town, where he is engaged in the task of immortalizing the old houses there in a series of paintings. Lily Brannan arrives in the village, researching the work of an architect who, like Max, found refuge there from Nazi Germany. There are some odd and vital connections between the architect and Max, and parallels between Max's life and Lily's that come to light in the course of the story. And Lily is presented with a new dilemma: as she becomes disillusioned with her architect boyfriend back home, she is increasingly attracted to a local man, who is married. The village scene is vividly rendered in this tale of art and life and the sometimes unexpected ways they intersect.
