Movie Description Sir Percy Blakeney, under the alias the Scarlet Pimpernel, saves the neck (literally) of a number of French noblemen during Robespierre's violent purge that followed the French Revolution. The film, based on Baroness Orczy's novel of 1905 and directed by Harold Young, features a terrific cast led by Leslie Howard, Merle Oberon, Raymond Massey, and Nigel Bruce.
Synopsis From the famous novel by Baroness Orczy, this is the fictionalized story of Sir Percy Blakeney, the saviour of the French aristocracy during the bloody revolution of the 18th century. Known as a dandy British aristocrat to his friends by day, he is, in truth, the daring rescuer known as the Scarlet Pimpernel, risking his own neck to save French noblemen from the guillotine by night.
Film Notes Additional cast: John Turnbull (Jellyband), Gertrude Musgrove (Sally, Jellyband's Daughter), William Freshman (Lord Hastings), Bromley Davenport (Brogard, French Innkeeper), and Hindle Edgar (Lord Wilmot).
Additional credits: John Armstrong (director of costumes); Francis Hallam (architect); B.J. Simmons and Company (costumers)
Daffy Duck does a riotous takeoff of this story--in which he plays the Scarlet Pumpernickel.
