Movie Description A poetry-spouting house painter, his cancer stricken wife and the family doctor deal with life in the inner city.
Synopsis Cicely Tyson, James Earl Jones, Lou Gossett, Roger E. Mosley and Glynn Turman star in this black family drama based on the Tony Award-winning play.
Johnny Williams, a house painter by day and poet by night, lives with his devoted wife Mattie. Their Air Force navigator son Jeff has just returned home after a successful tour of duty. But as it turns out, Jeff isn't a veteran at all. He was kicked out of officer's training school for refusing to be an "Uncle Tom." Now that Jeff's home, maybe Mattie will disclose her big secret: she's dying of cancer. To top off their family problems, Johnny's become an alcoholic. Will they find the courage to share their pain and help each other heal?
