Industry Reviews
This is the latest achievement by Singular, a journalist and notable author in the pop culture and media vein (e.g., Power To Burn: Michael Orvitz and the New Business of Show Business, Carol, 1996). The first major work on Geffen since the mid-1980s, this book is long overdue. Geffen, who is thought to be the wealthiest man in the entertainment industry, began Asylum Records in the late 1960s, started anew with Geffen Records in the 1980s, and became partners with Steven Spielberg and Jeffrey Katzenberg in SKG Dreamworks studios in the 1990s. Despite dropping out of sight periodically, he came back each time to make even more millions, thus the title. He is also a noted philanthropist, donating millions of dollars particularly in support of AIDS organizations. A solid achievement on an imprtant figure, this biography is highly recommended for public libraries. Regina L. Beach, Mississippi State Univ. Lib, Starkville
Bernstein

In the mid-1970s, David Geffen emerged as a very successful record producer, and at the time he had a highly publicized liaison with pop singer Cher. Then nearly 20 years later, at a huge awards ceremony in L.A., he prclaimed his homosexuality, and despite the fact that 'no American of Geffen's stature had ever before made such an admission to a mass audience,' he remains one of the top figures in the entertainment business. Geffen's story . . . is chronicled in a thorough, sensible biography. Aggressive, restless, and single-minded, Geffen is obviously made of the stuff that makes successful businesspeople. And this treatment definitely has a business emphasis. But the personal side of Geffen is dealt with forthrightly and fairly--thankfully not in gossipy tabloid fashion. Annotation copyright H.W. Wilson Company.
