Industry Reviews Gr 5-8 These lovely books are full of descriptive and well-captioned photographs and diagrams. Both offer explanations of the geology that formed and that which is formed by the river under discussion, and describe life as it affects and is affected by the waterway. This is a tall order when offered on double-page spreads, each one featuring at least three illustrations. The Mississippi introduces the first Native Americans, the explorers who first charted the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers, the importance of these waters in the settlement of the West, and the growing trade up and down the rivers. The Rhine begins with "How the Rhine Was Formed," and continues on with settlers, legends, important canals and tributaries, tourism, and habitats that have been ruined by industry along its banks and are recovering as the industries learn to operate under more environmentally sound regulations. Students studying the Mississippi will need more information on any one of these topics, making that book more suitable for browsers and introductory reading. However, children doing reports on rivers of the world or similar broad topics might find enough information in The Rhine. Dorcas Hand, Annunciation Orthodox School, Houston Lopate
