Movie Description Set in central Russia during the Civil War of 1918, this film from Hungarian auteur Miklos Jancso witnesses the brutality and senselessness of war as the Red and the White armies battle in the hills along the Volga. Told from the vantage point of Hungarian troops fighting for the Red Army, Jancso's Cinemascope frame captures the horror these soldiers endure fighting for the Bolsheviks, and the surreality, chaos, seemingly arbitrary nature of war.
Synopsis The events of Russia's civil war (1918-1922) are dramatized, focusing on the warring factions of the Red Army and their foes, the anti-Communist White Guards. The film presents the point of view of the Hungarians who fought on the side of the Red Army, and includes the director's philosophies on life and death, as well as his perspective on the accord between males and females during the war.
