Synopsis
A bitter feud between two prestidigitators at the dawn of the 20th century sets the stage for this World Fantasy Award-winning novel. After rising stage magician Alfred Borden exposes magician/spiritualist Rupert Angier's trickery during a séance, a fierce and ugly rivalry springs up between the two, with each seeking to expose and copy the other's illusions in the most public and embarrassing manner possible. But Angier simply cannot penetrate the secret to Borden's most spectacular illusion, the New Transported Man, in which Borden seems to instantaneously disappear from one location and reappear in another. In response, Angier designs his own version of the trick, based on a separate secret whose sinister implications will reach into the present day and affect the descendants of each man.

Publisher's Notes
First Line: "It began on a train, heading north through England, although I was soon to discover that the story had really begun more than a hundred years earlier."

Industry Reviews
"[A] brilliantly constructed entertainment, with a plot as simple and intricate as a nest of Chines boxes....Priest recreates the music-hall world of 1890s London, discloses the hard work and training behind successful magic, and hints increasingly that certain stage marvels may in fact violate physical laws. The result if a dizzying magic show of a novel, chockablock with all the props of Victorian sensation fiction...."
Washington Post Book World - Michael Dirda (10/27/1996)

"Narrative deceptions permeate...Christopher Priest's ambitious novel of two rival 19th-century stage magicians....The thematic focus of this eerie tale is on mysteries of identity, but the chief delight is an invention made by a cash-strapped Nikola Tesla for one of the rivals....Even if you guess how Priest accomplishes his miracles, you are guaranteed to enjoy this brilliant conjuring act by one of the master illusionists of our time."
Wired - Marc Laidlaw (01/19/1997)

"Electrifying effects and a deft handling of mysteries and their explanations...in an unexpectedly compelling fusion of weird science and legerdemain."
Doyle
