Synopsis
In this classic screwball comedy written and directed by Preston Sturges, Gerry Jeffers (Claudette Colbert) is bent on divorcing her husband, Tom, because she believes that he is better off without her. They are about to be thrown out of their apartment when Gerry meets a rich businessman being shown around as a prospective tenant. He gives Gerry $700 to start life afresh, but Tom refuses to believe her story and they quarrel. She travels by train to Florida to complete the deed and along the way has a series of comic adventures, including a run-in with a group of elderly, aristocratic hunters who, along with their pack of hounds, are frantically searching the train for her. When she meets a wealthy man played amorously by Rudy Vallee--who can help her architect husband finance his dream of building a modern, suspension airport--she consents to marry him. However, she still has to get that divorce first, and her husband is quite intent on winning her back. THE PALM BEACH STORY is a great example of Sturges at the height of his career, full of great one-liners, unexpected bits of business, and three massive crowd scenes.
