Soul giant Otis Redding crossed over into the pop charts with a version of the Temptations' "My Girl." This album followed that achievement and showed him bringing a wider perspective to R&B. Working in tandem with guitarist Steve Cropper, Redding tore up the blueprints of Beatles songs and standards, making them as much his own as the original songs the pair contributed. Never a subtle singer, Otis possessed a raw intensity, charging the material through the force of his personality. DICTIONARY OF SOUL was the last album issued before the singer's untimely death, the artistic challenges it posed were sadly left unrealized.
