Recorded between 1955-1956. Includes liner notes by Will Friedwald. June Christy collaborated with arranger Pete Rugolo on most of her Capitol sessions. Being a Stan Kenton graduate (like Christy herself), Rugolo was a true West Coast modernist, fond of angular, dissonant interludes in his writing. Sometimes this was good for the singer, sometimes not, though it has to be said that the resourceful Christy held her own in just about any musical situation. THE MISTY MISS CHRISTY finds Christy and Rugulo in a softer mode, even if still "cool." The dryly scored strings lend these pastel-like settings a classy chamber music veneer though Christy certainly hasn't forgotten she's a jazz singer. There are two well-wrought Ellington standards ("I Didn't Know About You" and "Day-Dream") plus a superior "'Round Midnight" with a dazzling alto solo by Bud Shank, as well as pianist Russ Freeman's haunting original "The Wind." Throughout, Christy's honesty and intelligence shine in a model showcase designed just for her.
