In this book, McCall poses two quetsions, neither of which has a definitive answer: When were the Middle Ages and what constitutes an underworld? It could be claimed that the Middle Ages didn't begin properly until the 10th or 11th century, and that they didn't not end until the 16th century. The underworld comprised all those people who were either unwilling or unable to comply with the laws of the church.
