When it comes to historical figures in the '60s folk-rock scene, few are as important, influential or as overlooked as Fred Neil. He was the first singer-songwriter to apply a jazzman's sense of time and phrasing to the folk and blues of 1960s Greenwich Village. A notorious recluse, he made only a few recordings before disappearing from public view forever. This two-disc collection thankfully contains most of that groundbreaking material, never before available on a U.S. CD. The most immediately striking aspect of Neil's sound is his cavernous baritone voice, lazily dripping out bent, bluesy notes. His dark, moody, low-key style fits as well with the blues and jazz tunes he covers as with his original tunes, forged from a unique combination of blues, folk, and jazz. Neil had a knack for improvisation, borne out by the lengthy jams that dominate many of the cuts. His spontaneous interaction with his musicians provides a constant feeling of discovery. True to his laconic nature, Neil never gets too overwrought or earnest. Even though many of his songs detail a life full of blues, he maintains the world-wary bluesman's bemused attitude toward a world full of trouble.
Industry Reviews ...Neil's ocean-depth voice inspires even more awe via CD's expanded dynamic range....These recordings penetrate a part of me where barkers and mortal voices can't go... Dirty Linen (06/01/1999)
