Synopsis The fourth entry in Swedish author Henning Mankell's brooding Kurt Wallender mystery series finds Wallender grim and disillusioned with his profession, intent on quitting the police force. Just as he is about to finalize his decision, a mysterious car accident is quickly followed up by a shooting that casts some doubt on the accident's circumstances, and Wallender jumps back into the game with renewed vigor. Soon, though, Wallender himself is the target of a murderous scheme, and he must fight not only to solve the case, but to stay alive in this excellent police procedural from an internationally acknowledged master of the genre.
