Synopsis Burl Crow is traveling through the Canadian wilderness in an attempt to escape life with his brutal father and drug-addled mother. Hearing a loud sound, he looks up to see a grand piano dangling from a helicopter flying overhead. Burl follows the path of the piano to a home near an isolated lake--the secret refuge of a famous musician named Nathaniel Orlando Gow. Hoping for a place where he can finally feel safe in the world, Burl ingratiates himself into Nathaniel's life hoping that Nathaniel will allow him to stay in his home forever., Fleeing from his brutal father, fourteen-year-old Burl arrives at the remote cabin of an eccentric genius who in just one day changes the young man's life forever.

Industry Reviews "Lyrical writing combines with an unpredictable, unusual plot to convincingly test a teenager facing life-altering choices. A truly compelling adventure story." Kirkus Reviews - None Given (08/15/1996)
"Wynne-Jones blends his plot elements seamlessly, keeping the tone low-key and descriptive and never slackening his steady pace (though the ending ties things up a bit too neatly). Burl's mixture of bewilderment and determination is believable, and the details of rural Ontario life, where everyone's familiar with marauding bears and depends on the doughty little local train, enrich the book and enhance the drama." Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books - Deborah Stevenson (10/19/1996)
"Intense and brooding....This is a survival story with a difference." Five Owls - Susan M. Swanson
"...a finely-tuned tale of physical, emotional, and spiritual survival, best suited to a more mature audience." Voya - Mary McCarthy (04/19/1997)
