Album Notes
Re-issue producers: Skip Heller, Joe Sehee.
Recorded live in 1961.
This short CD, as the title suggests, is the soundtrack to a long forgotten, early 1960s TV special. Les Baxter's music--orchestral extravagance augmented by out-of-the-ordinary instruments--breezes along at a brisk tempo, creating technicolor imagery of far away places. Distinctly Latin-flavored with rhumba beats and exotic percussion, Baxter crafts pure, over-the-top romanticism.
Violins are prominent on all the selections, adding exhilaration while binding the complex arrangements of piano, horns, bongos, rattles, birdcalls, and vocals. Beverly Ford's singing on "Ruby" and "Lover" lends an eerie and celestial quality to the music. The fact that these recordings were remastered from a video of a television program testifies to the popularity of Les Baxter, his unique orchestral style, and his selection of songs.
