Synopsis
This scholarly inquiry into the medieval concept of the "right of the first night", the right of a lord or ruler to deflower a bride on her wedding night, sees it as a historical fiction but a fiction whose power derived from the fact that it was widely believed. Bourneau surveys the history and literature of the period and beyond and unravels many layers of meaning attached to this notion. He puts forth a thesis that it represented a contest between the church and state for control of the body.
