Album Notes Recorded between 1963 and 1977. Includes liner notes by Jimmy Guterman.Personnel: Merle Haggard (vocals, guitar).Liner Note Authors: Jimmy Guterman; William Hogeland.Recording information: ??/??/1963-12/23/1969.Photographer: Michael Ochs Archives.Merle Haggard's decade at Capitol Records ranks as one of the most successful artist-label partnerships in country music history. Between 1966 and 1976, Haggard recorded 24 number one country hits and a dozen other top ten hits, at one point running off an incredible 22 consecutive top five records. The fine reissue label Razor and Tie has compiled 40 songs from this period, nearly all of them chart singles, in its two-disc set THE LONESOME FUGITIVE.LONESOME FUGITIVE traces Haggard's early career chronologically, starting with two singles for the regional Talley label (both later reissued on Capitol). Haggard's early hits are saloon classics like "Swinging Doors" and "The Bottle Let Me Down." With "The Fugitive," Haggard discovered his knack for prison songs (his three years in San Quentin gave him plenty of experience to draw on), leading to such standards as "Sing Me Back Home" and "Mama Tried." The success of Haggard's prison songs taught him the value of writing from personal experience, and much of the rest of this set reveals the depths of his self-exploration. A few notable omissions, namely "Running Kind" and "Always Wanting You," are the only flaws in this otherwise perfect overview of Haggard's Capitol years.
Industry Reviews ...For Haggard's hits of the '60s and '70s, the two-disc THE LONESOME FUGITIVE: THE MERLE HAGGARD ANTHOLOGY offers a 40-song selection with substantive annotation... Rolling Stone (19950504)
