Synopsis Academic turned private detective Tres Navarre has once again found himself in the hot seat. The University of Texas at San Antonio is aggressively courting him for a position as the medieval studies chair. But when a bombing in the dean's office nearly kills him and two others, Tres finds himself on a manic chase to track down a killer whose mission may be to murder the members of a wealthy amusement park ride manufacturing family whose patriarch is known as the "King of Carnivals." Gangsters, drug dealers, and murderous family rivalry intermingle with San Antonio's vibrant Latino culture in this action-packed whodunit.

Industry Reviews "...[E]ven if you have trouble swallowing the basic premise, that a local college would hire Navarre to replace a professor of medieval literature just shot to death, you'll almost certainly enjoy the resulting blend of cultural chaos and color-infused action that covers everything from ancient love stories to modern amusement-park rides." Adler
"As Tres battles drug dealers, gangs, and the police to rescue the weak, discover the truth, and give the innocent a second chance, Riordan's writing sparkles with evocative descriptions and enough talk to make a college dean back down." Oreskes
"Tres's taste for excess is as ferocious as his addiction to fiery food, and the fearless joy he takes in his roughneck adventures gives a real kick to this colorful series." New York Times Book Review - Marilyn Stasio (01/23/2000)
