"[The author] has a PhD in American studies from Yale, and he knows everything. I do not mean he thinks he knows everything...He is loaded with facile junk, as all personal journalists have to be--otherwise, how can they write so amusingly and fast?...Wolfe has proved to himself and to some others that teen-age culture is becoming dominant, so he casts himself as a teen-ager, a razzer of old folks and old establishments, the better to describe that culture. ...He is like all teen-agers, terribly embarrassed or annoyed by almost anything an American grownup not associated with automobiles may wear or say or do.
