Synopsis A young Chinese boy nicknamed Runt records his experiences in a journal as he travels from southern China to California in 1852 to join his uncle during the Gold Rush., The fictional diary of Wong Ming-Chung, a 10-year-old Chinese immigrant living in 1852 California. Along with his Uncle Stone, Wong Ming-Chung hopes to strike it rich as a gold miner. However, Wong Ming-Chung and Stone quickly learn that gold mining is not a road to easy wealth but, rather, backbreaking labor that yields very little beyond what they are obliged to turn over to the mine owners.
