Movie Description
John Wayne, or "The Duke," as his legions of fans affectionately called him, started his career playing the simply, one-dimensional hero. However, as his career progressed and his acting became more refined and mature, he advanced into a three-dimensional, nuanced screen figure. At turns heroic and corrupt, sometimes obviously suffering, Wayne's older persona was marked by an often weary stature and and face wrought with wisdom and doubt. THE LATER YEARS documents Wayne's stellar later performances, from 1952's BIG JIM MCLAIN to 1969's TRUE GRIT (for which he won an Academy Award.)
