Movie Description
In this post-WWII spy thriller, Leonard Markham (Campbell Scott), a naive CIA technician, becomes drafted into an operation where he becomes involved with an intriguing and possibly dangerous woman (Isabella Rosselini). His more experienced partner (Anthony Hopkins) struggles to save him before he must choose between the mission and his lover.

Credits
Cast:Campbell Scott, Isabella Rossellini
Director:John Schlesinger
Producer:Chris Sievernich, Wieland Schulz-Keil

Synopsis
For reasons unbeknownst to him, Leonard Markham - a young inexperienced engineer - is hastily sent to Berlin during the apex of the Cold War. His superior officer, Captain Lofting, whose compliance with U.S. forces is highly suspicious, quickly hands Markham over to CIA officer Bob Glass. A composed man of great restraint, Glass uses Markham as a sounding board for his personal obsessions, and cautions him to watch for spies. When Markham falls in love with Maria, an enigmatic and beautiful young woman, Glass tells Markham to beware of her. But Markham continues to see Maria despite Bob's warning. Will Markham's relationship with Maria jeopardize his safety and the completion of the assignment?

Film Notes
"The Innocent" premiered September 16, 1993 in Berlin with English and German dubbed versions showing in different locations.

Industry Reviews
"...[The] lensing is fluid and assured, eloquently using many eastern Berlin locations that convey the menacing atmosphere of postwar Germany..."
Variety - Rebecca Lieb (09/27/1993)

"...There is a sadness underlying THE INNOCENT that is rather appealing..."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (09/22/1995)
