Synopsis This novel is set at the dawn of human existence, during a prehistoric time. A tribe of Neanderthals, living a peaceful, primitive life, is doomed with the arrival of Homo sapiens, a new, weapon-using race who demonstrate their war skills by killing Neanderthals. Golding called this his favorite book, and it was also a favorite of the critics, who saw it as a logical extension of "Lord of the Flies."

Industry Reviews "Golding's...prose is forceful and compact. He tells a rousing good story. Yet his technical virtuosity, his use of image and symbol, among other literary devices, with as many philosophical implications involved as one wishes to work over--these are what account for his reputation...However, as a social commentator he is on weaker ground...His use of unnatural sources to describe society...is a device which limits him to a view which is largely confused and abstract."
