Synopsis
Colleen McCullough, the author of THE THORN BIRDS, presents a twisted sequel to Jane Austen's PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, picking up the story 20 years after Elizabeth and Darcy's marriage. The heroine of this re-imagining is Elizabeth's sister Mary, who flees the family home with naïve hopes of helping the impoverished citizens of England, though she is soon ambushed and held prisoner by a strange cult. McCullough's vision is quite pessimistic, especially her darker version of Mr. Darcy, who is depicted as a ruthless, scheming politician.
