Album Notes
Personnel includes: Chuck Prophet (vocals, acoustic, electric & lap steel guitars, harmonica, organ, six string bass); Scott Matthews (vocals, drums); Stephanie Finch (vocals); Max Butler (slide guitar, pedal steel guitar, mando guitar); Ralph Carney (bass flute, baritone saxophone); Jason Borger (Wurlitzer, Hammond organ, Mellotron, synthesizer, Rhodes bass, farfisa); Roly Salley, Andy Stoller (bass); Paul Revelli, Tim Mooney, Andrew Borger (drums, percussion); Joe Goldring (drums); Mark Reitman, DJ Rise (turntables); Jacquire King (background vocals).
Recorded at Pigshead, Toast, Jac's Shack, and Coast Recorders, San Francisco, California.
When Chuck Prophet moved to Yep Roc Records with his 2007 album, SOAP AND WATER, some of his back catalogue was reissued by his new label as well. THE HURTING BUSINESS was originally released in 1999 on the defunct Hightone label, and this reissue features no extra material or remixing, but remains deeply affecting. Prophet's fifth solo album, THE HURTING BUSINESS is about as glum as its title, featuring songs like the lost-love title track (a duet with Prophet's wife and former duo partner Stephanie Finch) and "Dyin' All Young," a character study about a young mother grieving the loss of her son.

Industry Reviews
...As one of the predecessors of the alt-country movement, Prophet continues to use his rich baritone and rootsy guitar-playing....his use of pop and urban influences enriches an already distinct American sound.
