Herodotus was a classical historian in the fifth century, B.C.E., whose work has been read and enjoyed for centuries. A much-traveled and observant man, Herodotus wrote the history of the rise of his own Greece, including its wars with its neighbors, and it is from him, for example, that we know about the Persian wars.
