Synopsis In this guide to what might be called conscious hiking, Michael Robbins provides generous portions of well thought out advice, as he conveys a sense of the joy of walking outdoors in natural settings. Robbins, who prefers hiking on public lands, includes recollections and observations that show that what he knows he learned from experience. His advice is freely given: public trails are the best; be prepared and plan; be observant; dress sensibly; carry essentials; and when in doubt just stay on the trail. He is truly informative on plants and other life forms, mishaps and dangers, and on gear: e.g., the GPS is a good tool but can break if dropped, so carry a compass and know how to use it. Robbins distinguishes between hiking and backpacking; his chapter on the latter is complete enough to be called a book-within-a-book. He also includes an appendix that lists public lands that have good trails. Written in an engaging manner, THE HIKING COMPANION makes good reading--especially outdoors on a rock or a bank....
