Synopsis Book two of the Merchant Princes trilogy continues the saga of Miriam Beckstein, who has recently learned of her true heritage as a member of the Clan, a family corporation that earns its profits by transporting goods between our world and another, medieval one. Miriam is thus the heir to fabulous wealth...and a target for various scheming factions. In this installment, she consolidates her position in the family by embarking on a business enterprise in a third, newly discovered world whose technology approximates that of the early 20th century. Meanwhile, she must deflect threats from the repressive and nosy local government, a revenge-bent long-lost branch of the Clan, and a mysterious mole amongst her nearer relatives' organization.

Publisher's Notes
First Line: "The committee meeting was entering its third hour when the king sneezed, bringing matters to a head."
Industry Reviews "Stross continues to mix high and low tech in amusing and surprising ways....[H]e weaves a tale worthy of Robert Ludlum or Dan Brown." Publishers Weekly (04/25/2005)
"Making a direct interface between the world of a journalist on deadline and a land of fantastical intrigue is almost an affront to the reader....It is a tribute to the budding powers of Stross, who works successfully in both the science fiction and fantasy genres, that he pulls off this feat in a fashion both amusing and gripping." Salon - Andrew Leonard (06/06/2005)
