South Korean writer/director Young-jae Lee fashions an achingly tender romantic drama about schoolgirl crushes with his feature-film debut, THE HARMONIUM IN MY MEMORY. Hong-yeon (Do-yeon Jeon) is a sheltered 17-year-old living in the rural countryside of 1960s Korea when her world is turned upside down by the arrival of a young, handsome, and city-educated teacher, Mr. Kang (Byung-hun Lee). As the camera lingers over Hong-yeon's quiet, angst-ridden desperation, Lee's film becomes a subtle evocation of first love that avoids Hollywood melodrama in favor of sweet-natured emotional honesty.
