Movie Description
Pre-AMERICAN BEAUTY suburban dysfunction is explored in Richard "CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF" Brooks' 1969 film. Mary Wilson (Jean Simmons) is a pill-popping, booze-swilling housewife chained to philandering heel-of-a-husband Fred (John Forsythe). At their 16th wedding-aniversary soiree, Frank runs off with Helen (Tina Louise) and Mary tries to decide between seducing one of the available-but-sleazy bachelors (Lloyd Bridges and Bobby Darin) or trying to kill herself. Angst-ridden spousal confrontation and lifestyle reevaluation -- a la WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF -- ensues. Simmons was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance.
