Album Notes Personnel: Gene Ammons (tenor saxophone); Jackie McLean (alto saxophone); Art Farmer (trumpet); Duke Jordan (piano); Addison Farmer (bass); Arthur Taylor (drums); Candido (congas). Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on April 23, 1956. Originally released on Prestige (7039). Includes original release liner notes by Ira Gitler. Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). Ammons assembled varying casts of like-minded players for his numerous All Star recording sessions. Jackie McLean (alto) and Art Farmer (trumpet) join Ammons (tenor saxophone) on 1956's THE HAPPY BLUES, a quintessential post-bop jam session featuring a strong frontline of charismatic soloists. The title tune, penned by Farmer, is just what it claims to be. Though 12-minutes long, the piece never falters or bogs down-even as each horn takes its time in working in and around the simple theme. "The Happy Blues" sets a relaxed pace for the whole album. No Ammons set would be complete without a ballad, and this time around it's the hypnotically romantic "Can't We Be Friends." Conga drum player Candido adds rhythmic sparkle throughout and is a real pistol on McLean's "Madhouse," a closer that finds the ensemble at its most cookin' and energetic.
