Synopsis Sidney Lumet directed this provocative drama in which a group of women who attend a Vassar-esque college during the Great Depression grow to realize the pact they made to remain friends might be more difficult than they thought. The film documents the years between their graduation in 1933 and the beginning of World War II. Candice Bergen and Hal Holbrook make their film debuts in this story, based on the Mary McCarthy novel.
