Synopsis An eleven-year-old foster child tries to cope with her longings and fears as she schemes against everyone who tries to be friendly., Gilly Hopkins had been moved from so many foster homes that she no longer even tries to be nice. Brilliant, arrogant and angry, she is determined not to fit in to her new home--and, of course, she would never love anyone. After all, her mother is going to come for her one day, isn't she? But Gilly hadn't counted on Maime Trotter, her new guardian; Maime's ward, the wimpy seven-year-old William Ernest; old and wizened Mr. Randolph; and even her teacher, the cool Miss Harris, to worm their way into her wounded heart.
