Synopsis
Set in a trendy New York neighborhood, THE GOOD LIFE resumes the story started in Jay McInerney's earlier BRIGHTNESS FALLS (1992). Corrine and Russell Calloway are undergoing a separation while also coping with the trauma of the attacks of September 11th. Luke McGavock, an Upper East Sider who meets Corrine while both are volunteering at the World Trade Center site, grapples with guilt about his financial success in light of the tragedy as he also tries to mend his troubled relationship with his daughter. THE GOOD LIFE describes a post-9/11 world, capturing the spirit of an era--a McInerney specialty--similar to the way his first novel, BRIGHT LIGHTS, BIG CITY (1984) got to the heart of 1980s greed and materialism. Here, during a time of uncertainty, he poses an important question: just who deserves to live the good life?
