Synopsis This is an imaginative alternate history in which a cadre of magicians rules 1868 London. Fourteen-year-old Nathaniel is the youngest member of the Office of Internal Affairs and must cope with the Resistance, a band of commoners attempting to overthrow the intimidating magicians. When a clay golem attacks the British Museum, Nathaniel must travel to Prague to learn its background. The wittily sardonic genie Bartimaeus assists him, and narrates some of the chapters. A young Resistance fighter named Kitty accompanies Nathaniel on his adventure, which also features a dancing skeleton and the fearsome Night Police. This is the sequel to THE AMULET OF SAMARKIND and the second volume of The Bartimaeus Trilogy. A New York Times Notable Book for 2004.

Industry Reviews "...[H]eads straight up to the top of the class....[A]s the author confidently tilts the narrative point of view, he magnifies the ambiguity and multiplies the thrills." New York Times Book Review - Elizabeth Devereaux (11/14/2004)
