Synopsis Powers's almost dauntingly intellectual detective story is about a Midwestern molecular biologist who, in 1957, falls in love with a colleague and disappears. Twenty-five years later, a young couple tries to find him. The novel's title refers not only to Bach's Goldberg Variations but to Poe's story "The Gold Bug," both of which are elements of the plot.

Industry Reviews "[T]he most lavishly ambitious American novel since 'Gravity's Rainbow'...an outright marvel ...[T]here is scarcely a sentence in this gigantic book that has not been tuned for maximum intensity....Indeed, for sheer thematic aspiration, 'Gold Bug' can contend comfortably with 'Moby Dick'." The Washington Post Book World
"[T]he most important and intellectually challenging American novel published this year." Philadelphia Inquirer
"Magnificent ...Powers' characters are fascinating, brilliant, eccentric people ...but beyond that is the ability to induce the reader to see the world differently, revealed in a new light." San Fancisco Chronicle
