Synopsis
Powers's almost dauntingly intellectual detective story is about a Midwestern molecular biologist who, in 1957, falls in love with a colleague and disappears. Twenty-five years later, a young couple tries to find him. The novel's title refers not only to Bach's Goldberg Variations but to Poe's story "The Gold Bug," both of which are elements of the plot.
