Album Notes Polish film composer Kristof Komeda seems an unlikely inspiration for a pop band. But it's altogether appropriate for this adventurous Swedish combo. Komeda shape evocative yet sprightly songs that sound like hit singles wedded with the moody grandeur of movie scores. The band's 1993 debut, POP PA SVENSKA ("Pop In Swedish"), was only released in Sweden and found Komeda singing in its native tongue. With THE GENIUS OF KOMEDA, sung in English throughout, Komeda sets its sights on North America. Komeda's smart songs are beautifully sung by Lena Karlsson, who flies over the interlocking rhythms of the combo like a sleek bird. The band can sound a bit like a friendlier Art Bears or Slapp Happy. This is modern and inviting music, catchy and challenging, with truly incredible drumming. Komeda is gently subverting pop music to fit its own needs. You're first seduced by the sounds and by the singing, and only later do you begin to consider the meaning conveyed by the words.
Industry Reviews 4 (out of 5) - ...the passion this Swedish group create in their music is deeply embedded in shrewd construction and clean delivery rather than in noise and feedback...Komeda craft the album's twelve tracks into perfection... Alternative Press (01/01/1997)
...Komeda sound like Stereolab might, if the Cardigans came over and mixed too many cocktails....The melodies twinkle, the strings purr, and buried deep beneath their Swedish tundra is a restrained urge to make dance music... Option (01/01/1997)
