Publisher's Notes
First Line: "Dear Uncle Jim, Grandma told us after supper that you want me to come to the city and live with you until things get better. Did she tell you that Papa has been out of work for a long time, and no one asks Mama to make dresses anymore?"
Industry Reviews "Stewart's elegantly simple prose in Lydia Grace's letters exudes a sunny optimism without ever forcing the reader into false sentimentality....This isn't merely a very pretty picture book. This is a stellar tribute to the spirit of a young girl who meets obstacles head on and celebrates her gifts within the boundaries of her small world." Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books - Pat Mathews (10/19/1997)
"...a moving, wonderfully rich illustrated story. It is that rarity, a pictorial delight that in 20 double pages gives more and more of itself each time it's read, and whose silent complexities reveal themselves with continuing pleasure." New York Times Book Review - Edward Koren (11/16/1997)
"Both the story and illustrations give readers a distinct flavor of the Depression era, without being overbearing about it, since it's Lydia Grace's engaging spirit and quiet determination that's the true focus of 'The Gardener'." Washington Post Book World - Karen MacPherson (12/07/1997)
"It's a lovely story exemplifying the old adage, 'Brighten the corner where you are,' and a good introduction to the epistolary form of storytelling." Karlin
