Album Notes The Go-Betweens: Robert Forster (vocals, guitar, organ); Grant McLennan (vocals, guitar). Additional personnel: Corin Tucker (vocals); Carrie Brownstein (guitar); Jen Chorowhas (violin); Brent Arnold (cello); Sam Coombes (keyboards); Adele Pickvance (bass, background vocals); Janet Weiss (drums, background vocals). Recorded at Jackpot Studios, Portland, Oregon in February 2000. The Go-Betweens were one of the first Australian bands to make a name for themselves in the New Wave era of 1978-80, and soldiered on until 1989. Their brooding synthesis of Bob Dylan, the Velvet Underground, Neil Young, and the baroque-pop of the Left Banke and the early Bee Gees never quite took the world by storm commercially, but they earned a small but devoted international following. After more than a decade, they decided to give it another go with some assistance from the Pacific Northwest's indie-rock goddesses Sleater-Kinney; it sounds like they never left. The gently sardonic "Heart and Home" and the stark, eerie, baroque-tinged "He Lives My Life" would've fit perfectly on their classic albums TALLULAH or SPRING HILL FAIR. The moody rocker "The Clock" has the stripped-down murmur of late-'70s punk (see Wire's PINK FLAG, early R.E.M., or Sleater-Kinney's THE HOT ROCK). For the most part, the Go-Betweens' pop/rock side takes a back seat to their melancholy balladry, but that's fine, as they do haunted melancholy better than most.
Industry Reviews 3.5 stars out of 5 - ...Refreshing....briskly melodic soundscapes and richly painted lyrics that dissect disastrous 'affaires de coeur'... Rolling Stone (09/14/2000)
8 out of 10 - ...[They've] reunited to satisfy a different group of imaginative provincials: the rockers of the Pacific Northwest....[They] sound no more dated now than they did back when punk was first figuring out its path to adulthood... Spin (10/01/2000)
3 stars out of 5 - ...These are exquisite songs....the beauty these men deserve is restored. Q (10/01/2000)
...A rich addition to their underappreciated catalog... - Rating: B+ Entertainment Weekly (10/06/2000)
4 out of 5 - ...10 lovely, largely introspective songs half-played, half-hinted, with sundry Sleater-Kinneys rattling around behind them... Alternative Press (11/01/2000)
8 out of 10 - ...There's a spontaneity here that replaces the formality of tradition with something more vital... NME (09/16/2000)

4 stars out of 5 - ...You don't deserve to call yourself a music lover...unless you own a Go-Betweens album....They're what passion is made from. Melody Maker (10/10/2000)
