Synopsis In 1769, a Scottish lass named Helen Gloag, en route to America, is captured by a band of pirates and sold into slavery, ending up in the harem of the emperor of Morocco. After a rocky beginning, she becomes the emperor's fourth wife--a position that seems to bring with it a mysteriously debilitating illness. The emperor's dwarf, Microphilus, who has been secretly in love with Helen for years, discovers the source of the illness. The story is told through both Helen's eyes and Microphilus's diary entries.
