Synopsis
Kingston's book was written in response to the burning of her home in the Oakland fires of 1991, in which she also lost the manuscript to a novel-in-progress called THE FOURTH BOOK OF PEACE. Incorporating that book into a memoir about the loss of her house, Kingston has created a moving meditation on loss and memory as well as a plea for peace in which she refers to wars old and new, including the Vietnam and Gulf Wars. A New York Times Notable Book for 2003.
