Movie Description The girlfriend of the toughest captain on the Erie Canal falls in love with a young farmer, hired as a boat hand. The farmer gradually brings her around to his love of the land in this fun filled story.
Synopsis This bright, musical remake of the 1953 film features singer Betty Grable (of the million dollar legs), a score by Harold Arlen and Dorothy Fields, and innovative choreography by Jack Cole.
The story centers on a young man who leaves the farm to help build the Erie Canal. He dreams of earning enough money to buy some land of his own -- but he gets more than he expected when he falls in love with a pretty young cook. Soon he has both a wife and work. But just when things seem perfect, there's a hitch: it looks as if a new project will derail the Canal and put him out of a job...
Film Notes Color by Technicolor.
Musical remake of the 1935 film "The Farmer Takes a Wife," directed by Victor Fleming, and featuring actor Henry Fonda's screen debut. That film was based on a theatrical play, which itself came from a novel. Neither the play nor the original movie was a musical.
Songs include: "Somethin' Real Special," "With the Sun Warm Upon Me," "We're in Business," "Today, I Love Everybody," "On the Erie Canal," "We're Doin' It for the Natives in Jamaica" and "Can You Spell Schenectady?"
