Synopsis
When illustrator Annie Swann begins a large mural in her new home, she can't understand why the mysterious face of a child keeps appearing beneath the children's stories she depicts on her wall. The face turns out to be that of a retarded 8-year-old boy whose dead body is found behind the wall. Annie turns to her Uncle Homer for help in this humorous tale of murder and mystique.

Horrible parents, evil spouses, manipulating children, daffy artists, and unscrupulous developers all figure in this gracefully delineated tale, which is rather darker than most of Langton's and is without a clear-cut happily-ever-after ending.

Coincidences start to gather like crows toward the end of the novel, but that's long been the connection between mystery and comedy. Langton knows how to propel her story forward with suspense even as she neatly braids clues and crimes with wit and horror.
