Album Notes Don't let the title or packaging fool you. THE EVIL JEANIUS is not a remixed version of Jean Grae's collaboration album with superproducer 9th Wonder. Instead, the fast-rising West Coast production duo Blue Sky Black Death (Kingston and Young God) has raided the Babygrande files for 10 of Grae's choicest unreleased recordings and crafted impressively fitting beats around them. The production sounds vary from moody and darkly cinematic to soulful and upbeat. Kingston and Young God flip a loop from the Velvet Underground's "Venus in Furs" to create a mood of lurking menace on the album opener, "Shadows Forever." Elsewhere, the inspired use of church organs and an arrangement of gospel vocals make Jean's lyrical boasting on "Threats" sound like it's being delivered from the pulpit. Short but sweet, THE EVIL JEANIUS is an unlikely gem that stands among Jean Grae's best work.
