Synopsis Back in 1983, long before THE L WORD became a TV hit, Alison Bechdel was publishing her serial graphic comics about a motley crew of friends, DYKES TO WATCH OUT FOR. This edition compiles some of the best and brightest moments from the strip. Subtitled "The Lives, Loves, and Politics of Mo, Lois, Sydney, Sparrow, Ginger, Stuart, Clarice, and Others," DTWOF has followed the lives of these queer-identifying, generally liberal (though variously political) characters--who at the most have one degree of sexual separation from each other--as they've grown up from partiers to parents...or not.

Industry Reviews "The greatest lesbian soap opera...is Bechdel's miraculously well-sustained chronicling of a circle of friends over the course of 20 years. Bechdel's comics autobiography FUN HOUSE (2006) has brought her much greater general attention than DYKES ever did, but make no mistake--the strip is her masterpiece." (Starred review.) (11/01/2008)
"It's real life in comics form, as told by a talented and developing artist over decades, and focused on an underserved community. In short, it lives up to the "essential" in its name..." (01/28/2009)
"Ms. Bechdel calls her strips 'half op-ed column and half endlessly serialized Victorian novel,' and that's not far off. I suspect that, over the years, DYKES TO WATCH OUT FOR has been as important to new generations of lesbians as landmark novels like Rita Mae Brown's RUBYFRUIT JUNGLE 1973) and Lisa Alther's KINFLICKS (1976) were to an earlier one."
