Synopsis
Seventeenth-century France--with magic added--was the inspiration for this swashbuckling novel set in the land of Ile-Rien, where sorcery is studied at the university and the realms of the otherworldly fay are but a breath away. Ile-Rien is faced with multiple magical and political threats. Young King Roland is entirely dominated by his treacherous cousin Denzil, who is plotting to grab the throne for himself. Urban Grandier, a practitioner of dark sorcery, has traveled to Ile-Rien for his own mysterious purposes. The palace, which is supposedly magically warded, is now open to invasion by the fay. And finally, Roland's illegitimate half-sister, the half-fay sorceress Kade Carrion, has chosen to pay her brother a visit. Can the Dowager Queen Ravenna and the Captain of the Queen's Guard, Thomas Boniface, manage to protect the kingdom from the dangers without and within?
