Movie Description THE DEVIL'S EYE (adapted from a play by Oluf Bang) is one of Ingmar Bergman's rare comedies, and it came as something of a surprise to audiences and critics after the release of the stark medieval drama THE VIRGIN SPRING the previous year. In this film, Satan (Stig Järrel) resurrects the legendary womanizer Don Juan (Jarl Kulle), now residing in hell, in order to seduce and deflower Britt-Marie (Bibi Andersson), the virginal daughter of a country pastor, played by THE SEVENTH SEAL's Nils Poppe. But things don't turn out quite as planned for Don Juan when Britt-Marie proves a more difficult conquest than the maidens back in his day. Though occasionally dismissed as a somewhat whimsical and therefore minor work in the Bergman canon (especially since it belongs to the director's mature period), this witty, bawdy film deals with some of Bergman's favorite philosophical subject matter, including the role of religion as a catalyst in the battle of good versus evil.
Film Notes Theatrical release: October 17, 1960 (Sweden).
Industry Reviews "In its highly stylised portrayal of earth and hell, it harks back to Powell and Pressburger's A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH..." Sight and Sound - Geoffrey Macnab (01/01/2008)
